Pasadena Rose Bowl Information
The Rose Bowl started in 1902 at Pasadena, California. It is the oldest college football bowl game and Rose Bowl tickets are very much in demand. Rose Bowl was featured as part of the “Tournament of Roses” that was held every year since 1890. The tournament was initiated by Professor Charles F. Holden of the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena to show the rest of the world how their roses were in full bloom even when other parts of the country were submerged in snow. Along with flower-covered floats, horseback riders, marching bands, polo matches, foot races, tug of war and other activities, the football game was also added for entertainment.

The very first football game featured at the Tournament of Roses did not attract much attention. So the officials discontinued it for 13 years and held a chariot race instead. The game was restarted in 1902.

Since 1 January, 1923, Rose Bowl Stadium has been hosting the Rose Bowl game. Every year, the Rose Bowl game is played on the New Year's Day.

Bowl Championship Series
In 1998, the Bowl Championship Series was created. Since then, the Rose Bowl team selection is tied to the three other BCS Bowls. But Rose Bowl always attempts to maintain the traditional Pac 10 vs. Big Ten format.

The 2002 Rose Bowl game served as the BCS championship game between Miami, which was then member of the Big East Conference, and Nebraska of the Big 12 Conference. The 2006 Rose Bowl game featured Texas and USC. Texas won the game 41-38. This game had the highest television viewership since the 1987 Penn State vs. Miami Fiesta Bowl.

Rose Bowl participation went beyond the Pac 10 and Big Ten on two other occasions. In 2003, Rose Bowl couldn't select the Big Ten co-champion Ohio State. Rose Bowl then tried to pick Iowa, another Big Ten co-champion, to preserve the Pac 10 vs. Big Ten format. But the Orange Bowl chose the Hawkeyes that year. This resulted in the Rose Bowl featuring the first appearance by Oklahoma, facing Washington State, a Pac 10 champion. The 2005 game also did not feature a West Coast team. It featured Texas of the Big 12 Conference because of computer rankings that had elevated Texas over California. Texas beat Michigan in the 2005 game.

The current Rose Bowl arrangement will run till 2014. The Pac 10 and Big Ten will retain their bids. Now, there is a provision that if either conference cannot fill their bid and if a non-BCS conference school qualifies, Rose Bowl will have to take that school. Else the bid will be filled by the Big East Conference Champion or Notre Dame.
